Laser Cutting Services

Our fiber laser cutting services handle steel up to 25mm, aluminum up to 20mm, and stainless steel up to 16mm. We hold cut tolerances to ±0.005″ on most materials and deliver edge quality that often requires no secondary finishing.

  • Steel up to 25mm: clean cuts with nitrogen-assisted processing.
  • Aluminum up to 20mm: oxidation-free edges ready for welding or coating.
  • Stainless up to 16mm: precision contours without heat distortion.

Bending / Forming

CNC Bending & Forming Services

Press brake bending transforms flat laser-cut blanks into 3D parts. Our CNC press brake bending holds angular tolerances to ±0.5° and produces consistent bends across long production runs.

  • Standard tooling: 90° bends, hems, offsets, and channels.
  • Material range: 0.5mm to 12mm thickness.
  • DFM review: bend sequence validation before production.

Stamping, Welding & Assembly

For volumes above 5,000 pieces, stamping often beats laser cutting on per-part cost. We also provide TIG, MIG, and spot welding for assemblies, plus PEM fasteners and standoffs.

  • Stamping: progressive and single-stage dies, 30 to 300 ton presses.
  • Welding: TIG, MIG, and spot welding for stainless, aluminum, and carbon steel.
  • Finishing: powder coating, anodizing, plating, bead blasting, and polishing.

Material library

Sheet Metal Fabrication Materials

Material selection drives part performance, cost, and lead time. We stock common grades and can source specialty alloys on request.

Metals

Aluminum: 5052 offers excellent formability for bending; 6061 provides higher strength for structural parts. Common thickness 0.5–20mm.

See our aluminum fabrication options

Stainless Steel: 304 suits general applications; 316 performs well in marine, chemical, and medical environments. Thickness 0.5–16mm.

View stainless steel capabilities

Carbon Steel: 1018, 1045, and A36 for structural brackets, industrial machinery, and automotive. Thickness 0.5–25mm.

Brass: C360 and C260 for electrical contacts, decorative hardware, and valves. Thickness 0.5–10mm.

Copper: C110 and C101 for electrical busbars, thermal components, and RF shielding. Thickness 0.5–10mm.

Material Selection Guide

5052 vs 6061 Aluminum: 5052’s superior formability makes it ideal for parts with tight bends; 6061 trades some formability for strength.

Thickness considerations: Thinner materials bend more easily but require support to prevent distortion. Thicker materials need larger bend radii and higher tonnage.

Finish compatibility: Aluminum accepts anodizing; stainless steel is typically passivated or left raw; carbon steel requires plating or powder coating for corrosion resistance.

Specialty alloys: If a material is not listed, Baetro can likely source it. Contact our engineering team for recommendations.

Sheet Metal Tolerances & Specifications

Precision sheet metal fabrication means holding the dimensions that matter — not over-tolerancing features that don’t.

Standard Tolerances

FeatureStandard ToleranceTight Tolerance
Laser cut dimensions±0.10mm (±0.004″)±0.05mm (±0.002″)
Bend angle±1.0°±0.5°
Bend position±0.25mm±0.15mm
Hole diameter±0.10mm±0.05mm
Flatness0.5mm per 300mm0.2mm per 300mm

Reserve tight tolerances for features that genuinely need them, such as mating surfaces, press fits, and critical mounting points.

Design Guidelines

  • Minimum bend radius: 1× material thickness for most alloys
  • Hole-to-edge distance: at least 1.5× material thickness
  • Hole-to-bend distance: at least 2.5× material thickness + bend radius
  • Maximum sheet size: 3,000mm × 1,500mm
  • Minimum wall thickness: 0.5mm, depending on material and geometry

DFM guidance

Sheet Metal Fabrication Design Guidelines

Good design reduces fabrication time, lowers cost, and improves part quality. These are the guidelines reviewed during DFM analysis.

Minimum Bend Radius

Design bends with a radius equal to at least 1× material thickness. Tighter radii risk cracking in aluminum and stainless steel, and require custom tooling that increases cost.

Hole-to-Edge Distance

Keep holes at least 1.5× material thickness from any edge. Distances less than this cause distortion during cutting and weaken the part.

Hole-to-Bend Distance

Place holes at least 2.5× material thickness plus the bend radius away from bend lines. Closer distances deform during bending and compromise hole integrity.

Flatness Requirements

Specify flatness only where function requires it. Standard flatness is 0.5mm per 300mm. Tighter flatness may require secondary straightening operations.

Tolerance Strategy

Only specify tight tolerances where function requires it. DFM review identifies over-toleranced features before production, often reducing cost without compromising function.

Material Thickness

Standard stock thicknesses reduce lead time and cost. Non-standard gauges require sourcing and may add 2–3 days to the schedule.

FAQ

Sheet Metal Fabrication Services: Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions engineers and sourcing teams usually ask before uploading drawings or CAD files.

How much does sheet metal fabrication cost?

Cost depends on material, thickness, part complexity, quantity, and finish. A simple laser-cut aluminum bracket in prototype quantity typically runs $15–$50 per part; the same part at 500 pieces drops to $3–$8. Bending adds $1–$3 per bend. Finishing adds 20–40% to the base part cost. Upload your CAD file for an exact quote in under a minute.

What’s the difference between sheet metal fabrication and CNC machining?

Sheet metal fabrication starts with flat sheet stock and uses cutting, bending, and forming to create the final shape. CNC machining starts with solid material and removes it to create the shape. Fabrication is usually faster and cheaper for thin-walled parts, enclosures, and brackets. Machining is better for thick sections and complex 3D geometry. Many projects use both — we can quote them together.

What file formats do you accept?

STEP, DXF, DWG, IGES, and SolidWorks native files (.sldprt, .sldasm). Include a PDF drawing with tolerances, material specs, and finish callouts. 3D models alone don’t capture critical dimensions — the drawing tells us what to inspect.

How long does sheet metal fabrication take?

Standard turnaround is 3–7 days from order approval to shipment, depending on part complexity and finish. Simple laser-cut parts often ship in 3 days. Welded assemblies, multi-stage stamping, or specialty finishes can extend lead time to 10–14 days. International freight adds 3–7 days for air, 25–35 days for ocean.

Do you ship internationally?

Yes. We ship sheet metal parts to customers in North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia via DHL, FedEx, UPS, and ocean freight. All orders include customs documentation and HS codes. Most customers choose air freight for prototypes and ocean for production runs over 50 kg.

What’s your minimum order quantity?

One part. We built our sheet metal fabrication service around prototype and low-volume work, so you can order a single bracket without paying NRE or setup fees. Per-part pricing drops at volume breaks (10, 50, 100, 500, 1,000+ pieces), but there’s no floor.

Can you help with design for manufacturability?

Yes — it’s included free with every quote. Our engineers review your CAD for bend radius violations, hole-to-bend distances, springback risk, and finish compatibility. Most reviews return 1–3 specific suggestions. On complex assemblies, we can hop on a 30-minute call to walk through the recommendations.
