What Is CNC Turning?

CNC turning is a subtractive manufacturing process in which a bar stock or chuck-mounted workpiece rotates against a stationary cutting tool. A computer-guided lathe removes material to produce cylindrical features — diameters, bores, threads, grooves, and tapers — with high concentricity and repeatability.

Unlike CNC milling, which spins the tool and moves the workpiece, turning spins the workpiece and feeds the tool along its axis or across its face.
