This equates to ¾ inch of diameter reduction per foot, or an angle of approximately 1°47′24″ from the center axis.
Thread Geometry

Sealing Mechanism

What Does “Nominal Pipe Size” Actually Mean?
A ½-inch NPT fitting does not measure ½ inch at any point — its actual outside diameter is 0.840 inches. This is the single most common point of confusion about NPT threads.

NPT and NPTF share identical taper and pitch dimensions — NPTF has tighter crest/root tolerances for dryseal. BSPT uses a 55° thread angle and is not interchangeable with NPT. Always use a thread pitch gauge for identification.

⚠️ Critical Warning: NPT vs BSPT at ½″ and ¾″
At ½-inch and ¾-inch nominal sizes, both NPT and BSPT use 14 threads per inch. The identical TPI means you cannot distinguish NPT from BSPT by counting threads alone — and the thread angle difference (60° vs 55°) is invisible to the naked eye. Always use a thread pitch gauge on the correct standard (Unified 60° for NPT; Whitworth 55° for BSPT) when identifying unknown fittings. Threading an NPT fitting into a BSPT port — or vice versa — will cross-thread, compromise the seal, and potentially strip both threads.

NPT Thread Engagement and Assembly
The hand-tight engagement length (L₁) is the distance a fitting threads into its mating port by hand — before any wrench force is applied. After hand-tight engagement, the fitting must be tightened further with a wrench to create the interference seal. The standard guideline is 3 to 4 full turns past hand-tight for proper sealing engagement.

Design tip: NPT and NPTF threads can be mated together — the dimensions are physically compatible — but the dryseal performance of the NPTF side is lost when mated with a standard NPT thread. Apply PTFE tape or liquid sealant to the NPT side and the joint will seal reliably.
Machining NPT Threads — CNC Turning and Tapping
NPT external threads are commonly single-pointed on a CNC lathe using a 60° threading insert and a G76 or equivalent canned cycle. Internal NPT threads in sizes up to ~2 inches can be tapped; larger sizes are single-point bored.
The critical parameter for single-point NPT threading is the taper offset. Because NPT tapers 1:16, the X-axis endpoint must be smaller than the X-axis start point by the thread length divided by 16. For internal NPT threads, tapping is faster than single-point boring — especially for production quantities.
G76 Canned Cycle (Fanuc)
Taper amount (R): R = total thread length × tan(1.7899°) ≈ thread length × 0.03125, expressed as a radius value and negative for external threads (OD gets smaller toward the end). Thread height: for NPT’s truncated form, use 0.8000 × pitch as a starting point.

The difference is in thread form tolerances at the crest and root: NPTF threads have sharper crests and roots machined to tighter tolerances so that the crest crushes into the mating root during assembly, creating a metal-to-metal seal that requires no PTFE tape or liquid sealant. NPTF is specified where sealant contamination is unacceptable — fuel systems, high-pressure hydraulics, and cleanroom applications. The two can be mated together, but the dryseal performance of the NPTF component is lost when paired with standard NPT.
No. NPT and BSPT are never interchangeable.
